Queensland e-bike Laws - Overview
Queensland E-Bike Laws & Requirements
All e-bikes supplied by By Earth & Ocean are fully compliant with Queensland legislation and applicable Australian standards. Our bikes are legal to ride on Queensland roads, bike lanes, shared paths and bicycle infrastructure, subject to the below considerations.
Age & Licensing Requirements (From 31 August 2026)
Riders must generally be at least 12 years old.
Riders aged 18+ must hold a learner permit, driver’s license or equivalent recognised license.
Riders aged 12–17 without a learner permit, driver’s license or equivalent recognised license may participate when supervised by a parent or guardian.
Exemptions may apply for riders unable to hold a license for medical reasons and those riding in designated areas such as rail trails and mountain bike parks.
Where Can I Ride?
Legal e-bikes may generally be ridden anywhere a bicycle can be ridden, including roads, bike lanes, shared paths and dedicated cycling infrastructure, unless otherwise signed.
Speed Limits & Passing Pedestrians
E-bike motor assistance is limited to 25km/h.
On shared paths, riders must slow to 12km/h when passing pedestrians.
Maximum speed on footpaths is 12km/h.
Riders must comply with any signed speed limits and always ride with due care around other path users.
Safety Requirements
Approved bicycle helmets must be worn at all times.
Riders must not use a hand-held mobile phone while riding. Phones mounted for navigation are permitted.
Riders must not ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Passengers may only be carried on bikes specifically designed to carry passengers.
Options for Families with Younger Children
Children under 12 are generally unable to ride e-bikes under Queensland law. Depending on the tour and the size of the child, younger children up to approximately 40kg may be able to participate as a pillion passenger on selected bikes.
Selected tours can also be operated using conventional non-electric bicycles. Our private family tours can be tailored to suit younger riders, with routes, distances and pacing adjusted to match the ages, abilities and confidence levels of your group.
